Two-Week Summer / Winter School

 


Overview

This two week summer/winter school targets students interested in learning and appreciating Indian Cinema. Through this module, the students would be able to understand how Indian films probe questions of national identity, gender, race, class, etc. They would be exposed to art films and popular films to study how these films portray Indian society and culture. The format of the module is such that the students gain insights through lectures and discussions and screenings.

The modules deliver and discuss not only theoretical insights and intervention options in the said topic, but will also include also in-depth acquaintances with the regional landscapes by means of guided site visits and excursions.

The aim of the module is to provide a comprehensive overview of Indian cinema. By understanding its historical development to locating it in its political, social, cultural nuances, the module explores images of Indian society that emerges through cinema. Basically, through the module, students will acquire an overview of Indian Cinema enabling them to appreciate it.

Learning Outcomes

On completion, students will be able to

  • Explain a comprehensive overview of Indian Cinema
  • Critically analyse and understand its historical development over time
  • Locate its political, social and cultural nuances
  • Explore images of Indian society through Cinema
  • Appreciate diverse social values and internalise humane sensitivities through Cinema


Course Contents

  • Unit 1: History of Cinema in India – Art films vs. popular films
  • Unit 2: India on Screen – National narratives, National identity
  • Unit 3: Multi-ethnic society – Religion in Indian films
  • Unit 4: Diaspora films and major regional film industries

Fee Details

The Program fee would be EUR 550 per student.

Included in the Fee:

  • Accommodation at University Guest House (on a twin sharing basis) for the duration
  • Breakfast and Lunch on all working days
  • Internal Transport
  • Access to Sports and Emergency Medical Facilities

Not Included in the Fee:

  • Flight Tickets
  • Travel other than that specified in Program
